- Wilfred Owen was
- a sensitive
- and thoughtful
- young man,
- temperamentally
- less well-
- equipped than
- most for the
- unspeakable
- horrors of trench
- fighting in the
- first world war.
- But war became
- his great theme:
- it made a poet of
- him, and then it
- killed him
- #
- This poem is a
- sonnet, a form
- usually employed
- for love lyrics.
- Owen compares
- the noise of war
- to the funeral
- rites, which
- slaughtered
- soldiers never
- receive. In the
- eighth line the
- comparison
- seems to become
- too merciless
- even for him,
- and an unadorned
- note of mourning
- creeps in

- The Roman poet
- Horace said "It is
- sweet and fitting
- to die for one's
- country." The line
- was often quoted
- with approval at
- the time of the
- first world war.
- Here Owen paints
- a sickening
- picture of the
- reality of war as
- a reproach to the
- armchair patriots
- back in England
- #
- Owen used a
- poetic medium
- which had nearly
- always been
- mainly associated
- with the pastoral
- idyll - birds,
- trees, flowers.
- His merciless
- descriptions of
- men blown to
- pieces utterly
- changed the
- possible subject
- matter of poetry.
- 'Beauty' would
- never be the
- same again
- #
- Owen published
- only five poems
- in his lifetime.
- The others were
- contained in
- notebooks
- retrieved after
- his death, and
- often existed in
- several versions.
- Editors, fellow
- war poets such as
- Siegfried Sassoon
- and Edmund
- Blunden pieced
- together Owen's
- work - and his
- short life
- #
- It has often been
- asked why the
- second world
- war did not
- produce poets
- like Wilfred
- Owen. Part of
- the answer is
- that the fight
- with Hitler was
- a different kind
- of war, producing
- a different kind
- of poet; but it
- is also right to
- point out that
- Owen had already
- won the battle
- with the old lies
- about war
- #
- Wilfred Owen
- died in the week
- before the first
- world war came
- to an end. His
- poetic legacy is
- small - just one
- slim volume of
- anguished and
- compassionate
- verse - but it
- is enduring
